High-Temperature Heat Pumps and Steam Generation
High-temperature heat pumps and steam generation creates increased demands for heat exchanger construction, to withstand not only the higher temperatures but often at the same time higher pressures. Vahterus Plate & Shell Heat Exchanger (PSHE) is at the forefront of heat-exchanger technology and already complies with these demands.
The core of our heat exchanger is a fully welded plate pack enclosed in a strong shell structure. This means no leaking gaskets, or other limiting materials together with compactness and superior heat-transfer performance. PSHEs are widely used in conventional natural refrigerant heat pumps and are ready for new generations of high-temperature heat pumps.
Vahterus heat exchangers can be customised for your specific needs. Many constructions, materials and plate size options make it possible to find the best fit for various heat-transfer duties. The design of the shell around the plate pack can be modified for each user, but the core structure, the plate pack, is always fully welded.

Vahterus introduced a new Steam Generator product line in October 2023
Vahterus has over 30 years' experience with heat-transfer solutions.
In October 2023, we introduced a new Steam Generator product line. It is designed especially for industrial heat pumps users, but any liquid, gaseous or condensing heat source can be used when producing steam with the Vahterus Steam Generator.
We are entering an era when fired boilers for heating and steam generation purposes are being replaced, in many cases by heat pumps, both in households and for industrial use.
Vahterus has delivered steam generators for various applications for years. Heat sources range from process waste heat to power-plant steam. Our long experience of industrial refrigeration and wide knowledge of steam systems allows us to design well-fitting steam-generator solutions that can be used with many types of heat pumps utilising high-temperature and a large pressure range. Vahterus PSHE Multi-Condenser
Vahterus has also developed a type of heat exchanger that combines desuperheating, condensating and subcooling in one single unit.
The Vahterus PSHE Multi-Condenser is a new model of ammonia condenser developed primarily for the growing heat-pump market, but suitable for other condensing applications such as steam condensers.
Vahterus PSHE Multi-Condenser improves the heat pump system COP (Coefficient of performance), desuperheating, condensating and subcooling the ammonia in a single unit, allowing for multiple variations.
The product offers increased safety and a service-free future for the customer. The fully welded plate construction has no gaskets that require service or create possible leakage risk for the surrounding environment.
The installed heat-pump capacity of Vahterus condensers is over 1000MW. Vahterus PSHE Multi-Condenser will make it possible to get even more capacity and higher system COP in the coming years. Please find the product sheet as a PDF via the button below.
Vahterus Heat Pump Issue 2023
In our latest Hot & Cold Magazine we focus on our heat pump solutions for the next generation.

Industrial Heat Pumps - A Closer Look at The High-Demand Solution
The last two years have been filled with uncertainties, due to COVID and the war in Ukraine. Exhibitions and events have been on hold, as has this magazine. But today, you’re holding in your hand a new issue of Hot & Cold, which we hope you’ll enjoy reading.
In this issue, we focus on heat recovery and energy saving – in particular heat pumps. Because of the urgent need to solve global warming and the current energy crisis, with very high prices and scarce availability of fossil fuels, totally new technical solutions need to be developed. Heat exchangers are key to all these solutions, where the main requirement is compact, safe and high thermal efficiency.
In this issue, we discuss the differences between heat pumps, exploring what happens when using various refrigerants in heat pumps and their environmental impact. Our conclusion is that if we want to prevent global warming and environment pollution, the only acceptable refrigerants are natural ones such as ammonia, CO2, propane and butane. If we all go in this direction, huge developments will be made, not only in heat pumps, but also chillers. With hundreds of millions of small-sized heat pumps and chiller-freezers in operation, this is an urgent question to be solved – the faster the better.
Global warming brings many interesting challenges for heat-exchanger manufacturing, with a growing market and increasing demand for innovative solutions such as thermal efficiency in chillers, heat pumps and fuel systems. Together with you, our trusted partners, we at Vahterus have worked for over 30 years on natural refrigerant development. We hope that you will continue to push us in that direction in the future. Together, we can discover sustainable solutions to tackle climate change and ensure a safe environment for the next generations.
Together we succeed!
